Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Utilities Technician to join our team to work in the Valve Program. Utilities Technicians are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Valve Utility Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City's distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, and so forth). The City will provide CDL training and license reimbursement upon passing the CDL exam * Employer paid insurance Work Hours: Valve Utilities Technicians work a rotating after hours call schedule. Pay for being on call (standby) is 8 hours at regular pay. If called back into work, the employee is paid at the overtime rate as indicated by policy. Hours could differentiate based upon flexibility and seasonality, wherein availability to work a varied schedule is required for this position. * Performs water valve preventive maintenance * Identifies valves needing repairs * Assist other investigative, hydrant, and repair programs as needed * Assist with annual flushing program to ensure water quality standards * Opportunity to work after hours for projects as needed * Required to work after hours on an on-call rotating repair call crew * Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations * Collects, prepares, and enters system data; creates work orders; logs work activities; update maps; enters account data; compiles and prepares reports; maintains records, files, and work-related documentation * Operate valve maintenance equipment including valve trucks, hydraulic valve turners, ERV's, handheld equipment, fabrication Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED and two years of utilities experience or experience related to the fields listed below as shown: * Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation * Construction: grading, storm drain, sitework, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction * Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems * Farming: manual labor, equipment operating * Moving Company: labor, truck driver * General Municipal Worker: utility inspector * Tech School Student: mechanical * Firefighter: full or part-time * Laborer: digging trenches, unloading materials, preparing job sites, operating machinery OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Licensing and Certifications: * Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire * Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Performing routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions * Monitoring and maintaining required supplies, materials, and inventory * Hauling materials, supplies, equipment, and soil * Operating and driving heavy equipment such as a dump truck, tractor-trailer, tractor, flatbed truck or water truck * Inspecting assigned equipment for mechanical readiness * Performing minor preventative maintenance on equipment * Setting up work sites and traffic control operations * Operating assigned tools and equipment * Providing attention to detail in assignments * Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications * Providing customer service * Basic mathematical concepts * Following directions and meeting standards ADA and Other Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and travel.
